A start in Croatia

Searching the internet following a remark of Barbara, my partner, I contacted Gerard Smeets. He is a tourist professional who had bought a piece of land near our terrain. We met and arranged to come to Croatia. We arrived at our land in September 2005. From then on an experiential learning event started that has taken me to where we are now. Building plans nearly finished. Planning first tourist season 2008.

Kitchens, the place to start any business

Depending on the history of the country, formalities are more or less complicated. The land is owned by my company in Croatia now.

The name was created in Zivkovic Kosa in Casa Boja. We where with Michael, a cousin of the ex owner of the terrain. It was a sunny day. And we were discussing what name the company should have. The system determines certain aspects of the name. It must be Croatian. Together in the kitchen, smoking and drinking, we found among some variations, the name ‘Bogata Suma’.

We will start new companies with different tasks apart of owning the land. One question that is everywhere, is a house a legal presence or not. That depends on building date. We’re safe In that aspect. The building date can be established via old electricity bills. No bills, no house. Logic no?

Researching 2006

During 2006 I have been concentrating on the what and how of creating my ideal resort in Croatia. Ideal? Eko friendly and with unique design planned to host people in a unique setting. I started to visit campings with a different approach. Writing and photographing anything that catched my eye or was a pleasant experience. In the end I made a layout and selected building principles to use on the land. In principle natural forms and an easy start to create space and activities for the first season. In the meantime Frank van Egmond became a partner and good friend. He’s an internationally operating financial controller.

Designing in 2007

While designing forms and researching options I visited Croatia every 2 months. In the meantime Ekosense was founded in January of 2007. An enrichening circle of friends suddenly is there, promising an engaging existence in an otherwise unknown land.

Much more concrete marketing ideas, business plan sessions, connecting for more partners, volunteer organisations marked a change from design to preparing for first season.

Planning for 2008

The scene of 2008 will show a field kitchen, with a wide range of lounging possibilities, camping in a natural setting and straw bale and cob building.
